Mention Velocity

Mention velocity is the rate of change in a brand's AI mention frequency over a defined time period — measuring whether AI-generated citations of a brand are accelerating, stable, or declining.

Mention velocity adds a time dimension to the static measure of mention rate. While mention rate tells you how often your brand appears in AI responses at a point in time, mention velocity tells you whether that presence is growing or shrinking — and how fast.

Positive mention velocity (increasing citations) suggests your AI brand visibility strategy is working: new content is being indexed and cited, entity signals are strengthening, or positive press coverage is boosting authority. Negative mention velocity (declining citations) is an early warning signal — possibly indicating that competitor content is gaining authority, that AI model updates have changed citation patterns, or that your content is becoming stale.

Velocity metrics require consistent measurement over time (weekly or daily) rather than one-off checks. A single mention rate snapshot is useful; trend data over 3-6 months is actionable.

Why it matters for marketers

Mention velocity is a leading indicator — it reveals changes in AI brand visibility before those changes materialise as business outcomes. Brands that monitor velocity can respond to declines proactively rather than reactively.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate mention velocity?

Compare your average weekly mention rate over the most recent 4-week period against the 4 weeks prior. A positive percentage change indicates positive velocity. Monitor velocity separately by platform to identify where changes are concentrated.
